Positioned directly across the bay from Mobile, it sits along U.S. Highway 98 between Spanish Fort to the north and Fairhope to the south. With a population of approximately 28,000, Daphne is one of the larger Eastern Shore communities and has been among the fastest-growing cities in Alabama over the past two decades.
Character and history
Daphne’s roots as a permanent settlement date to the 19th century, developing around the natural harbor along Mobile Bay. The city was incorporated in 1927, though its growth accelerated significantly beginning in the 1980s as improved bay crossings and highway infrastructure made commuting to Mobile more practical.
Today, Daphne blends established Eastern Shore character with newer development that has come with its growth. Historic buildings along Main Street and the bayfront coexist with newer subdivisions and commercial areas farther east.
Location and access
Daphne is bordered by Mobile Bay to the west and lies within Baldwin County’s Eastern Shore corridor. It sits roughly 10 miles east of downtown Mobile via Interstate 10 and the Jubilee Parkway causeway, with typical commute times of 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. U.S. Highway 98 serves as the main north-south corridor along the Eastern Shore.
Access to the Gulf beaches at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is roughly a 45-minute drive south.
