Spanish Fort is a city in Baldwin County, Alabama, positioned on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay just north of Daphne. With a population of approximately 10,000, Spanish Fort has been one of Baldwin County’s fastest-growing communities over the past two decades, expanding significantly with new residential and commercial development.
Character and history
Spanish Fort takes its name from the fort constructed by Spanish forces in the late 18th century, when the area was part of Spanish West Florida. The site later played a role in the American Civil War as part of the Battle of Mobile Bay’s inland actions.
The modern city was incorporated in 1993 and has grown rapidly since, driven by its commuter access to Mobile, expansion of Interstate 10 infrastructure, and significant residential and commercial development along the U.S. Highway 31 and U.S. Highway 90 corridors.
Location and access
Spanish Fort sits at the northern end of the Eastern Shore, bordered by Mobile Bay to the west and connecting to Interstate 10 as it crosses the Jubilee Parkway causeway toward Mobile. U.S. Highway 31 runs north-south through the city, and U.S. Highway 90 provides an alternate route to Mobile.
Downtown Mobile is approximately 15-20 minutes west via Interstate 10.
